Clinical Fellowship in Abdominal Imaging and Intervention

At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, we believe that the subspecialty of abdominal radiology should include radiologists who practice both imaging and intervention, founded and based on an organ-system, disease-focused approach that is supported by the American Committee for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). In our opinion, an organ system organization that includes both imaging and intervention aligns with the broader trends in medicine, and is the best way to care for patients and achieve the goals of the subspecialty of abdominal radiology and radiology in general.

Twelve (12) ACGME-accredited fellowship positions are now available each year. This fellowship offers a comprehensive experience of both diagnostic and interventional rotations that are designed to maximize fellows’ involvement in CT, MRI, Ultrasound and cross-sectional interventional radiology procedures. The MRI rotation includes sophisticated 3T MRI applications in the abdomen and pelvis, including state-of-the-art prostate MRI, MR Elastography, Iron Quantification, MR Enterography, and MR Urography. The fellows gain experience in advanced CT techniques such as Dual-Energy CT, CT Urography, CT Colonography, and CT Enterography.

A new rotation at adjacent Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital has been developed to expand the fellows’ experience to an environment that allows supervised exposure to multiple imaging modalities and interventional procedures, at community hospital setting, boosting the trainee’s confidence and autonomy for future radiology practice. There is hands-on US training in diseases throughout the body, including OB/GYN, and simulation training of US-guided interventional procedures. PET/CT, as well as training in MRA and CTA, can also be offered as elective time.

Our fellows master percutaneous interventions and learn state-of-the art percutaneous tumor ablation techniques, such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave, cryoablation, and, in selected cases, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation. Fellows will work in an innovative surgical and interventional set of suites, called AMIGO (Advanced Multimodality Image Guided Operating) Suite, which is a clinical translational test center of the National Center for Image-Guided Therapy. These suites include real-time anatomical imaging modalities, like X-ray and US, combined with cross sectional digital imaging systems, such as CT, MRI, and PET/CT.

The fellowship program provides protected time for an extensive array of educational lectures, specifically designed for fellows. A total of 4 weeks of elective time is offered. Additional dedicated selective time has been added to the core curriculum for a personalized learning experience in different diagnostic, interventional, and research tracks based on the learner’s specific goals and interests.

The fellowship duration is nominally 1 year; 2-year fellowships are also offered.

Combined Two-year Program in Abdominal Imaging and Intervention and Evidence-Based Imaging and Informatics (CEBI)

A unique fellowship opportunity is available for one of the seven Abdominal Imaging and Intervention fellows each year. This two-year program is comprised of a full ACGME-accredited clinical fellowship in Abdominal Imaging and Intervention followed by a one year program in radiologic informatics and evidence-based imaging supplemented with a seven-week full time intensive educational program at the Harvard School of Public Health’s Clinical Effectiveness Program.

Up to 20% of the clinical year (first year) will be spent on informatics research projects and 20% of the research year (second year) in the clinical division. Research opportunities are broad and can be tailored to the interests of the candidate. Current projects include work on evidence-based imaging, clinical decision support, advanced visualization tools and radiation reduction strategies. Research time takes place at the Center for Evidence-Based Imaging (CEBI), a Brigham-established institute founded with the goals of improving quality, safety and efficiency of care through innovative technologies. After completion of the Summer Program in Clinical Effectiveness (at the start of the research year), there will be an option to continue on towards the Masters in Public Health (MPH).

Combined Two-year Program in Abdominal Imaging and Intervention and Image Guidance, Precision Diagnosis and Therapy

A unique fellowship opportunity is available for one of the twelve Abdominal Imaging and Intervention fellows each year. This two-year program is comprised of a full ACGME-accredited clinical fellowship in Abdominal Imaging and Intervention followed by combined program available through Institutional NIH T32 training grant in Image Guidance, Precision Diagnosis and Therapy within the Ferenc Jolesz National Center for Image Guided Therapy. Applicants for this fellowship would complete a focused year of research training after completion of the clinical AII fellowship year. More information regarding eligibility requirements and thematic areas of research can be found here.

All candidates interested in the combined two-year fellowships should indicate their interest on the Abdominal Imaging and Intervention Fellowship application.

Eligibility

PGY-5, completion of Diagnostic Radiology Residency, ABR-eligible (or certified), and completion of the USMLE 1, 2, and 3.
