Fellowship in Emergency Radiology

Welcome! You have taken the first step toward pursuing a challenging and rewarding learning experience. The Division of Emergency Radiology is pleased to offer several Fellowship opportunities per academic year.

Academic Year 2025-2026

This one-year fellowship is designed for radiologists seeking advanced training for a career in Emergency Radiology. Fellows are exposed to the full breadth and depth of Emergency and Trauma Radiology in a diverse patient population in varied environments. Clinical work focuses on the imaging of acutely ill and traumatized patients presenting to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Emergency Department, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital Emergency Department, Newton Wellesley Hospital Emergency Department, Cooley Dickinson Hospital Emergency Department, and Foxboro and Harbor Urgent Care Centers.

Our BWH Emergency Department has completed a major renovation, and our beautiful new reading room will remain centrally located within the ER, allowing our fellows to play pivotal roles in the acute care of patients. During the COVID pandemic, we have also developed robust video conferencing capabilities to enable meaningful remote consultations with image sharing for those at other locations.

In all aspects, fellows serve as integral members of the care team to help guide immediate management decisions through direct interaction with Emergency Medicine, the trauma team, and consulting specialists in neuro, orthopedics, cardiothoracic, vascular, and plastic surgery. Under supervision of our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Radiology faculty, our fellows develop essential skills in optimizing imaging approach and workflow, managing a busy practice and interpreting all imaging modalities across all organ systems, including emergency neuroimaging of the brain and spine on CT and MRI.

Our Division is deeply engaged in our national society, the American Society of Emergency Radiology, and in the international emergency radiology community, and our staff includes both the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 past ASER presidents. Our group is a leading contributor to research and education in the emergency radiology community.

Our fellows share in the evening and weekend coverage, but there are no full overnight shifts. Electives in a variety of other BWH radiology divisions can be arranged depending on a fellow’s specific interests. Academic time of up to one day a week may be granted to those interested in an academic career and gainfully involved in structured research projects. Fellows are encouraged to initiate their own research projects with full support from relevant staff members, or to join projects from several ongoing in the division. Academic work space and access to Harvard resources is provided. Additionally, each fellow is provided at least 2.5 hours / week of protected teaching time in the form of case review sessions and didactic lectures. Small group case review sessions are held daily by an ER staff radiologist, and lectures are exclusively designed for ER fellows on important topics in Emergency Radiology. All fellows are encouraged to attend resident lectures throughout the year.

Emergency Radiology fellows have several opportunities to participate in teaching activities for Harvard medical students and BWH radiology residents. When staff positions are available, qualified fellows are strongly considered to transition into attending roles within the Division of Emergency Radiology at conclusion of fellowship. We consider it our job to set our fellows up for success in their first attending job, and we have been delighted to see our fellows move easily into their first staff positions. Many of our fellows have also assumed leadership roles in developing ERad practices around the country.
