Fellowship in Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention

Since 1992, the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Division of the Brigham and Women’s Department of Radiology has maintained a multidisciplinary clinical fellowship program. Each academic year, the Division appoints seven fellows to train with MSK Fellowship-trained Faculty Academic Radiologists to experience the full range of musculoskeletal imaging and imaged-guided interventions. The MSK fellowship provides a comprehensive exposure to cross sectional imaging and radiography of rheumatological disorders, spine disorders, joint replacement, trauma, sports medicine, and orthopedic oncology with all modalities (radiography, CT, US, MRI, and fluoroscopy).

The core of the MSK Imaging and Interventional Division is the newly created centralized MSK Radiology Reading room, located in the heart of the Orthopaedics and Arthritis Center, Building for Transformative Medicine, newly constructed in October 2016. This features state-of-the-art equipment and 12 MSK dedicated ergonomic reading stations. Fellows are primary operators on procedures such as arthrography, US-guided injections, CT- and US- guided biopsy of bone and soft tissue lesions, spine injections, and spine biopsies.

Two dedicated MSK outpatient procedure rooms with C-arm fluoroscopic units and ultrasound machines are located steps away from the main reading room, and a shared cross-sectional interventional suite with nursing and anesthesia support is a short walk away. There are multiple MRI and CT scanners located both within the building and throughout the Brigham Health regional network, including the first in the country clinical 7 Tesla MRI scanner. Our other sites include:

  1. BWH MGH Ambulatory Health Center at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. The on-site MSK attending and fellow will work together to perform joint injections and interpret studies. Elite athlete imaging is also performed here for the New England Patriots and New England Revolution.
  2. Faulkner Hospital, Boston, MA. Located about 3 miles from the main BWH campus, Faulkner hospital is a community hospital providing a full range of orthopedic services. The on-site MSK attending and fellow work together to perform joint injections, spine injections, and the occasional inpatient procedure.

Fellows work closely with the subspecialty-trained MSK faculty radiologists (all of whom are active SSR members with 3 active ISS members), and have opportunities to build rewarding relationships with referring our many Orthopedic and Rheumatology colleagues. Faculty radiologists are present at all arthrograms and interventional procedures, and provide direct supervision at the workstation daily as the examinations are reviewed while the fellows are responsible for consultations and image interpretation.

The fellows are highly encouraged to conduct clinical research and academic projects (research, review paper, book chapter, etc.) with a faculty advisor, and dedicated academic time may be provided for those fellows choosing academic pursuits. If the fellow presents research at one academic meeting, travel expenses will be reimbursed. Teaching responsibilities include case presentations at the weekly multidisciplinary orthopedic oncology tumor board, monthly rheumatology and spine conferences and medical student teaching sessions. There are also regular opportunities to teach the residents with formalized case conferences and informal daily teaching as residents rotate through the MSK division.

Social events include a welcome barbeque, a holiday party, as well as impromptu get-togethers after work. Many lasting friendships have developed in previous fellowship classes, both within each class and with the faculty and staff, and we look forward to working with you!
