Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency
About The Program
The Brigham and Women’s Hospital Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency Program is an ACGME approved program. We are a categorical 6 – year program with a preliminary (PGY1) year spent in the department of General Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The program participates in the NRMP and currently fill 2 positions for each year for a total of 10 residents.
The first three years of the program (PGY2-4) will be spent closely in parallel with the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program. The final two years of the program (PGY5-6) will focus on Interventional radiology and will also have rotations in Critical Care, Medical, Surgical and Radiation Oncology and Vascular Medicine as well as a dedicated rotation, in Pediatric Interventional Radiology at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Core Clinical Skills Year in the Department of Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Diagnostic rotations and learning the fundamentals of IR
- 8 weeks of dedicated IR time
- 1 month of noninvasive vascular imaging
- x-weeks of selective time
Core Diagnostic Rotations as well as IR
- 4 weeks of dedicated Vascular Interventional and Cross-Sectional IR
Diagnostic rotations, IR, and preparation for the Core exam
- 8 weeks of dedicated Vascular Interventional and Cross-Sectional IR
- Core exam
IR, ICU, and Completion of Diagnostic Requirements
- 6 months IR at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston VA
- 1 month of Critical Care at BWH
- 1 month IR Clinic
- 1 month Elective time
IR, IR Clinic, and Research
- 4 months of IR at BWH
- 3 months of IR at Boston VA and including a block with Vascular Surgery
- 1.5 months of Pediatric IR at Boston Childrens Hospital
- 1 month of Cross-Sectional IR
- 2 weeks in outpatient vein centers
- 1 month research
IR Residents at BWH will experience the breadth and depth of our specialty.
This disease-focused care includes:
- Interventional oncology: Y90, TACE, ablation
- Venous and lymphatic disease: thrombectomy, recanalization and reconstruction, superficial venous ablation and sclerotherapy, chronic pelvic venous disease embolization, pulmonary and peripheral AVM treatment, dialysis circuit intervention, lymphatic leak correction
- Arterial disease: renal artery stenting, endoleak correction
- Musculoskeletal disease: genicular artery embolization, kyphoplasty, bone ablation
- Women’s and men’s health: prostate artery embolization, uterine fibroid embolization, varicocele embolization
- Portal hypertension: TIPS, gastric variceal obliteration
- Hepatobiliary disease: interventions including cholangioscopy, stone retrieval, and biliary drainage/stenting
- Trauma
- Genitourinary disease: including urinary drainage, ureteroplasty
- Pediatric disease: residents will rotate through Boston Children’s Hospital and will perform basic and advanced interventions including treatment of vascular anomalies
Interventional Radiology rotations will include training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the West Roxbury Veterans Administration Hospital and the Brigham and Women’s Vascular and Vein Care Centers in Newton Corner Foxboro.
Residents completing the 6-year training program will be eligible for the American Board of Radiology IR/DR certificate.
