Joint Program in Nuclear Medicine (JPNM) Residency

Welcome to the Joint Program in Nuclear Medicine. This is an ACGME-approved residency training program dedicated to the training of the next generation of leaders in academic and clinical Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (NMMI). The program is based in the Division of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, Department of Radiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), and fully integrated with other Harvard Medical School-affiliated institutions including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and VA Boston Healthcare System.

This unique collaborative program, established in 1971, has long and venerable history of drawing on a broad wealth of faculty expertise and extensive research resources across participating institutions to provide the trainees with exposure to a broad range of applications of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging.

About The Program

Goals

The goal is to prepare qualified MD or MD/PhD trainees to practice nuclear medicine and molecular imaging at the highest level. This is accomplished through a series of supervised clinical rotations, didactic and laboratory learning, and participation in teaching and research activities at Brigham and Women’s Hospital NMMI and the JPNM-affiliated institutions.

Rotations

The trainees develop progressive proficiency in clinical NMMI while mastering in-depth skills in the sub-specialized applications of NMMI including pediatrics, oncology, cardiology and radiotherapy through a series of supervised, complementary clinical rotations in the Divisions of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the VA Boston Healthcare System.

In each rotation, the trainees receive supervised training in all aspects of clinical nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. After the completion of each rotation, faculty at each affiliate institution provide a detailed evaluation of each resident regarding their progress in each of the ACGME core competency requirements.

The curriculum consists of scientific and non-interpretative courses given throughout the year. There are multiple conferences that are held weekly, monthly, or annually, with clinical and scientific content.

Curriculum

  • Summer Core Nuclear Medicine: July- September
  • Physics & Instrumentation in Nuclear Medicine: August- December
  • Dosimetry: March
  • Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry: January- March
  • Health Physics and Radiation Safety: April- May

Conferences

  • Clinical Conferences: Tuesdays
  • Monthly Case Conference: Tuesdays
  • Monthly Journal Club
  • Seminars in Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging: Thursday
  • NMMI and Radiology Grand Rounds at each institution
  • Research Project Presentation: June

Tumor Board:

  • Prostate Cancer: Monday
  • Endocrine: Wednesday
  • Neuroendocrine: Wednesday
  • Additional tumor boards at BCH

Research

Trainees are encouraged and expected to participate in research activities with the goal of presenting project results at national or regional meetings and in peer-reviewed journals and review articles. The trainees will also present their research project at the end of the year. The trainees are matched with research mentors.

Training Pathways and Application

Nuclear Medicine (NM) Residency

Applicants who have completed training in Diagnostic Radiology:

One year of NM residency training is offered to individuals who, at the time of entering the JPNM, will have successfully completed training in an ACGME-accredited Diagnostic Radiology (DR) program or a similar DR program located in Canada and accredited by the RCPSC.

Applicants who have completed training in other medical specialties:

This pathway is designed for exceptional applicants who have successfully completed a residency in Nuclear Medicine or Diagnostic Radiology outside of United States, including one preparatory clinical year and consists of one to two years of training dependent on prior experience.

Foreign medical graduates must hold a valid ECFMG certificate and proof of eligibility for a J-1 or H-1 clinical visa.

Interested candidates can submit an electronic application here.

Applications require the following to be uploaded as pdfs:

  • CV
  • Personal Statement
  • Recent Photo (jpeg)
  • Three (3) contacts for faculty letters of reference (at least one from PD)
  • Exam Transcripts
  • If applicable, ECFMG Certificate

Combined Diagnostic Radiology/Nuclear Medicine (DR/NM) Residency

This is a dual certification pathway offered to those who have completed 1-year of training in an ACGME accredited program in clinical area (eg. internal medicine, surgery, transitional). Trainees in this pathway are fully integrated into ACGME-accredited BWH DR/NM programs. The first three years of training are dedicated to training in Core Diagnostic Radiology, and the last two years of training are focused on Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging with opportunities for translational research and electives tailored to each individual’s interest and career goals.

Trainees who plan to enter this pathway may declare this intention during application to the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at BWH. Alternatively, trainees may apply for this pathway later in their Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at BWH. Trainees are expected to successfully sit for both ABR and ABNM board certification examinations.
